» La Leyenda de Los Volcanes by Jesus Helguera

She was daughter of Tizoc “Tlatoani” (Emperor). Mixtli was besieged by numerous noblemen, among them Axoxco, a cruel and sanguinary man who wanted the hand of Mixtli. However, the maiden’s heart belonged to a humble plebeian named Popoca, who had gone to battle to conquer the title of Caballero Aguila (Eagle knight) in order to be able to dispute the hand of Mixtli. The princess, aware of the danger her beloved was in and thinking of their impossible love, took her own life. She didn’t imagine that Popoca would return triumphant. When he saw his beloved dead, Popoca took her lifeless body to the mountain and he stayed at her feet thinking that the snow would awaken her from her sleep and that they would be reunited. Since then, Iztaccihuatl (sleeping woman), Popocatepetl (smoky mountain) and Axoxco (Ajusco) rise over Mexico City. [x]
